SportsAid Cymru Wales
SportsAid Cymru Wales is delighted to announce that the Rt Hon Kim Howells, one of Britain's best known political figures, has been appointed President of the charity (2017) taking over from Lord Kinnock, who has stood down after six years in the post.
SACW Director Ron Jones said "On behalf of the Board of Directors of SACW, we are delighted that Kim has accepted our invitation to take over the reins as President from Neil.
"Kim is a lover of sport and passionate about Welsh youngsters being given every opportunity and encouragement to shine on a bigger stage, whatever their pursuits. We would add our thanks to Neil for his contribution over the years."
Chairman - Mark Oliver
Mark is Director of Business Services at award-winning gas pipeline Wales & West Utilities, main sponsor of SportsAid Cyrmu Wales. A former Wales youth rugby player, Mark made his debut for Newbridge RFC on his 18th birthday against a Pontypool team containing some of the legends of the game - Price, Windsor, Faulkner, Squire, Butler, Perkins and Cobner. He played 100 games for Newbridge RFC and Crawshays until injury forced a premature end to a promising career. Mark said “Sport – whether team or individual - is one of the ways that Wales expresses itself as a nation. It is a privilege to be able to help encourage and support future talent.”
Executive Director - Ron Jones MBE
(Retired October 2019)
One of Wales’ greatest athletes, sprinter Ron competed in three Olympic Games, Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964 and Mexico 1968. He had the honour of captaining the British team in Mexico. He also represented Wales in four Commonwealth Games. In 1963, Ron was part of the GB team which equalled the world record in the 4X100 relay at the White City, London. He subsequently enjoyed a successful career as chief executive at QPR, Portsmouth and Cardiff City soccer clubs. Ron was awarded the MBE for his services to sport in 2000 and in 2013 was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame. In October 2018, he officially opened the new £3m Ron Jones Stadium in his home town of Aberdare.
Welcome to Jayne
To say that SportsAid Cymru Wales’ new administrator, Jayne Morgans (pictured, right, with outgoing administrator Linda Chamberlain-Jones) has a sporting pedigree is a bit of an understatement!
Jayne, who is on the Management and Executive Committee of Creigiau Golf Club, near Cardiff, is a 12 handicap golfer. She has played squash and badminton at league level, cricket for St Fagans and for nearly 20 years was a Cardiff and Howardian hockey player, representing the sport on Cardiff City Council’s Leisure & Amenities Advisory Committee.
Jayne said “I am very excited about working with SportsAid Cymru Wales to help support young competitors who are showing real promise in their chosen sport. The charity is unique in that no other organisation provides support at this level. It is very rewarding to track the progress of our grant recipients – some of whom have gone on to become world-beaters. Companies and individuals who have contributed to SportsAid can feel very proud.”
The President, Chairman and Executive Director are supported by a panel of Vice-Presidents and Directors drawn from business and sporting life in Wales.
