Coronavirus Pandemic - we'll be back ASAP!

In common with all other organisations, SportsAid Cymru Wales has had to suspend face-to-face fundraising activities until restrictions are lifted by the Government. Many of the young sportspeople whose exploits would normally fill these pages are having to train alone, with makeshift facilities and few, if any, events in which to compete. We look forward to a release of pent-up energy in the not-too-distant future! Stay safe in the meantime.

Nourishing emerging talent!

Seven young Welsh sportspeople with exciting talent were presented with SportsAid Cymru Wales grants at the latest fund-raising lunch in Carmarthen organised by SACW's West Wales committee.

Handing out the awards was Nicola Phillips, Chef de Mission for Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games, who only arrived back in the UK from Australia the day before!

The line-up, from left, is Nicola, Bryn Thomas (Golf) Jamie Dean (Golf) Joshua Thomas (Cricket/Javelin/Rugby) SACW Director Ron Jones, Finlay Yates-Jones (Canoe) Lili Bryant (Canoe) Emily Shawyer (Shooting) and Macy John (Weightlifting). Macy claims the highest possible sporting connections - her great uncle is Barry John!

Nicola praised the work of SportsAid and said that without the charity's help some of the Welsh athletes at the CWG would not have made it to the Games. The lunch attracted, as usual, around 200 loyal supporters from business, public administration and the world of sport and is expected to raise around £5,000. Guest speaker was former Welsh international hooker Garin Jenkins.

Olympic Stars Turn Out For SportsAid

Swimming superstar Jazz Carlin and track cycling champion Becky James, both double Silver Medallists at Rio, gave their backing to SACW at a fund-raising lunch at the Park Plaza Hotel in Cardiff. Pictured (top) are Becky and Jazz with SACW Director - also a double Olympian - Ron Jones with journalist, broadcaster and author Carolyn Hitt.

SportsAidCymru Wales raises its funding through the generosity of sponsors and the support of the Welsh public, most notably at celebrity sporting lunches and golfing events throughout the year.

Business/Sports/Celebrity Fundraising Lunches

Each year, SportsAid Cymru Wales organises fund-raising lunches in Cardiff and Carmarthen, the former usually on the eve of major sporting occasions in the city.

Hugely popular, (the Carmarthen event attracts 200 guests with a waiting list) these lunches have developed an intimate, relaxed, club-like atmosphere and are attended by sports celebrities, media personalities, guest speakers, top sports administrators, business people and individuals – all enjoying the unique atmosphere, bonhomie and excitement that surrounds sport!

Many of our guests have attended many times. The accent is very definitely on humour and patriotism – whichever part of the world you come from! Boosted by sponsorship, auctions and raffles, the lunches make a significant contribution to the work of SportsAid Cymru Wales. Contact us for details of upcoming events!

SACW West Wales - a proud sporting tradition

SportsAid Cymru Wales would like to pay a special tribute to the hard-working members of its West Wales Committee- and their many supporters - who regularly stage spectacular, sell-out sports/celebrity/business/media lunches at the Ivy Bush Royal Hotel Carmarthen, raising more than £5,000 on each occasion.

Highlights include the presentation of SACW Keith Cobain Awards - created by Keith's wife Barbara in memory of her late, sports-mad husband - to promising young athletes from the region.

Chairman of SACW West Wales Committee David Butler said "Everyone takes pride in the success of our young competitors. Whatever their sport, it requires tremendous commitment to make progress and it is thanks to the fabulous ongoing support we get from business and other parts of the community in West Wales that we can give them a helping hand."
